One of the main patterns of the Country of the Upright People is, undoubtedly, the peoples fondness for culture, art and traditions. It is certainly no coincidence if the country has been hosting the continents most prominent international cultural events.
Burkina Faso has over 60 ethnic groups, with as many cultural values and structures. Though it is difficult to capture the main highlights originating from this remarkable cultural diversity, we can underscore some of its most significant features and vibrant manifestations.
In order to get an insight throughout the cultural secrecy of these societies and in the absence of any monograph, it is necessary to attend live daily events in the villages such as: initiation rites, weddings, harvest, funeral, etc.

Oral tradition: it appears to be the cultural basis of society and an important historic source of ancient structure and cultural inheritage.
Music and dance: they play a paramount role in the peoples life. They are means of entertainment, as well as a form of expression of deep feelings and emotions.
Arts. Both performance arts and fine arts are of great value. The handmade objects serve simultaneously utilitarian tools, satisfy and express and spiritual needs.
Crafts: Fine basket making, weaving, pottery, bronze and leather crafts molded by craftsmen groomed over generations have become artistic objects used in everyday life. Local raw materials like copper, bee wax silver, leather, clay, gold, straw, and cotton are used in handwork.
The Government organizes international multi disciplinary cultural and crafts events on a regular basis. The most famous are FESPACO (the Pan-African Cinema and Television Festival of Ouagadougou) and SIAO (The International Arts and Crafts Show of Ouagadougou). The FESPACO takes place every other odd year whereas the SIAO happens every other even year.
